Between 6 and 12 months

Cognitive development

From 7 months, the baby sits without support and puts its arms out to be held. He/she can grab its feet and turn in 2 directions.

The baby has gone onto solid foods, he/she eats with a spoon. The sucking reflex has gradually been replaced with a chewing reflex.  

Between 8 and 10 months, he/she responds to its name and crawls on all fours. This is usually when the first milk teeth start to appear.   The baby is emphasizing its independence and wants to hold a spoon itself.

Between 10 and 12 months, the baby can stand up with support and can walk if its hands are held by an adult. He/she can clap hands and wave "goodbye".

 

Emotional and linguistic development

Between 6 and 8 months, a baby becomes more and more aware of persons around him or her. He/she increasingly expresses joy but also frustration with laughs or grimaces.

First of all, he/she starts to understand facial expressions and gestures and tries to imitate them

About 8 months, the baby can be anxious. He/she needs affection and wants to stay close to you.

He/she starts to understand certain words or sentences and repeats sounds that he/she likes. Finally, the baby says its first words: "mama", "dada".
